A 12-year-old girl in Sydney, Australia, named Lorena McDonald, suffered severe injuries in a frightening encounter with wild monkeys while on vacation in Bali, Indonesia. The monkeys attacked her at the Ubud Monkey Forest Sanctuary, leaving her with serious wounds, including a bite on her neck.
Despite following safety guidelines, Lorena and her family were unexpectedly targeted by the monkeys during what was supposed to be a joyful day out. Her mother, Flavia, recounted the harrowing incident where a monkey leaped from her husband’s shoulders to Lorena, tugging at her clothes before biting her neck in a matter of seconds.
Following the attack, Lorena required a crucial rabies vaccination to prevent any potential health risks. Unfortunately, obtaining the vaccine came at a steep cost of approximately $2,930 (£2,930) due to limited availability and high medical expenses in Indonesia.
In light of the traumatic experience, Lorena’s family is now relying on their travel insurance to cover the hefty medical bills incurred. Flavia, still shaken by the incident, emphasizes the importance of travelers being cautious and ensuring they are adequately protected against such encounters when visiting destinations like Bali.
This incident adds to a series of similar monkey attacks in the Ubud Monkey Forest, a popular tourist spot in Bali. In a previous incident in 2019, a photographer from Melbourne, Patrizia Accoglienza, also faced a similar ordeal when a monkey bit her neck unexpectedly, causing severe bleeding and requiring immediate medical attention.
