“Gurkha Veteran Amputee Conquers Everest, Embraces Cruise Adventure”

Hari Budha Magar, a Gurkha veteran from Nepal who served in the British Army for 15 years, lost both his legs in an IED blast in Afghanistan in 2010. Instead of focusing on his own challenges, Hari’s goal has been to motivate others that overcoming obstacles is achievable regardless of circumstances.

Setting an example through his actions, Hari, aged 46, became the first above-the-knee amputee to conquer Mount Everest and aims to scale the highest peaks on all seven continents by January 2026, with just two mountains left to achieve this feat.

Receiving a Special Recognition Award at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards was a moment of immense joy for Hari. “I was thrilled. It was a great honor,” he expressed. “My aim was simply to climb mountains and raise awareness about disabilities.”

Although Hari had traversed mountains worldwide, he had never experienced a cruise holiday. However, P&O Cruises, the new headline partner for the awards, surprised all winners, including Hari, with a cruise vacation.

Embarking on a voyage to the Norwegian Fjords with his family in spring, they spent a week exploring the breathtaking landscapes and activities aboard the ship, Iona. Hari shared, “We anticipated less time on land during a cruise, but we had ample shore excursions, including riding cable cars up mountains and exploring the fjords.”

One highlight for the family was ascending Mount Hoven via the Loen Skylift, one of the world’s steepest cable cars, offering stunning views of Nordfjord. Hari described the experience as amazing, with snowfall at the peak and enjoyable snow activities.

Among their memorable experiences was visiting the fjord village of Olden by train, known for its stunning natural beauty. Hari appreciated the accessibility of the locations, making it ideal for those with mobility constraints.

Reflecting on their cruise holiday, Hari praised the ship’s amenities, including cinemas, swimming pools, and spas. Celebrating his daughter’s birthday with a family dinner at Epicurean was a cherished moment.

Hari also shared his inspirational journey with fellow passengers aboard Iona, receiving positive feedback and engaging with guests who admired his resilience. Despite his mountain background, Hari found serenity at sea and expressed interest in planning future cruise vacations.

Impressed by the wheelchair accessibility and friendly atmosphere on board, Hari encouraged others with disabilities to embark on a cruise without hesitation. “Once you begin, you’ll always find a way. People are supportive; just be kind, seek assistance, and enjoy the experience,” he concluded.
