Team Europe’s Tyrrell Hatton stepped in last minute for Viktor Hovland in a crucial fourballs match, partnering with Matt Fitzpatrick. Hovland was sidelined due to a neck injury, but Europe continued its strong performance at the Ryder Cup, particularly in the morning foursomes session.
Despite Hovland’s initial pairing with Fitzpatrick for the day’s final session against Keegan Bradley’s team, an unexpected turn of events led to Hatton filling in for the injured player. Hatton, coming off a successful foursomes victory earlier in the day with Jon Rahm, was called upon by team captain Luke Donald to join forces with Fitzpatrick.
Hovland, who received treatment on his neck in the morning, managed to play in the morning foursomes, contributing to Europe’s lead against Team USA. However, his withdrawal for the afternoon session allowed Hatton to step in under the Captains Agreement rules, which permit substitutions under certain circumstances.
Donald expressed confidence in Hatton’s abilities to deliver in Hovland’s absence, emphasizing that the change was a precaution and that Hovland is expected to participate in the singles session on Sunday. With Rasmus Hojgaard as the only European player not in action, Donald highlighted the importance of adaptability on the second day of the Ryder Cup.
“Saturday is always a little bit more fluid,” Donald remarked, highlighting the strength of the four groups and the team’s excitement for the upcoming session. Europe maintained a strong position with a score of 8 1/2 to 3 1/2 going into the Saturday afternoon matches, showcasing their determination to secure victory in the prestigious tournament.
