Chilling recent video recordings reveal a killer prowling the streets before embarking on a fatal break-in. Direece Roche, 31, unlawfully entered 64-year-old Fintan McDwyer’s residence during the early hours of June 30 last year by entering through an open window in his bedroom. He proceeded to brutally stab McDwyer 77 times while the victim, a retired grandfather, was home alone as his son and girlfriend were attending a wedding event.
Roche confessed to authorities his intention to steal Sammy, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross owned by Mr. McDwyer, which was actually the dog of Roche’s grandmother, who happened to be Fintan’s sister.
In court-presented footage, Roche can be observed navigating backyards and alleys en route to the home in Fallowfield, Manchester, dressed in dark attire, gloves, and a balaclava. Following the heinous act, he evaded capture by scaling fences.
McDwyer’s lifeless body remained undiscovered on his bed until two days later when his adult son returned home. A meticulous search by law enforcement found a minor blood trace on a fence Roche used in his escape, a crucial discovery commended by a detective as exceptional police work.
Forensic analysis linked the blood to Roche, and a flashlight with Roche’s DNA was also recovered. In a prior occurrence in 2011, at the age of 16, Roche was convicted of murdering 23-year-old Adam Steele in Salford. After serving part of a life sentence for that crime, he committed the murder of McDwyer about nine months post-release.
Roche, who claimed in court that McDwyer had sexually abused him as a child (a claim rejected by the jury), received a whole life order at 31, ensuring he will be ineligible for parole. This places him among a select group of fewer than 100 inmates in the UK serving such sentences.
During sentencing, Mr. Justice Bright discredited Roche’s claims, affirming McDwyer’s innocence and condemning the murder as premeditated. He noted Roche’s apparent lack of remorse or regret.
Detective Inspector Lee Shaw of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team, speaking post-sentencing, praised the investigative team for connecting Roche to the crime through evidence, including crucial CCTV footage. He acknowledged the suffering endured by McDwyer’s family and hoped the sentence would offer them some solace in the face of tragedy.
