Labour’s Lucy Powell Calls to End Two-Child Limit

-

Labour’s Lucy Powell, vying for the deputy leadership position, is urging the Government to eliminate the two-child limit, emphasizing the need for clarity in the upcoming child poverty strategy. Advocates within the Labour party are urging leader Keir Starmer to scrap the policy, attributing it to placing undue financial strain on families.

Powell, the MP for Manchester Central, criticized Labour’s past policies on winter fuel and disability benefits, suggesting they have alienated the party from ordinary citizens. She is currently competing against Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson for the deputy role, with Phillipson facing mounting pressure to address the child poverty strategy and the controversial two-child limit.

During a BBC podcast, Powell stressed the importance of prioritizing child poverty reduction, highlighting the two-child benefit cap as a critical policy to combat this issue. She emphasized the need for a clear plan on how to achieve this objective.

Powell also expressed concerns about Labour’s alignment with the public, noting that certain missteps have eroded the party’s connection with everyday people. She emphasized the necessity for Labour to present a cohesive vision that unites progressive voters around a fairer economy and a clear stance on whose interests the party serves.

In a bid to enhance communication between the party and its leadership, Powell indicated that she prefers not to return to the Cabinet but to act as a bridge between different party factions. She suggested that her dismissal from her previous role may have been due to her outspokenness on issues like benefit cuts.

Phillipson, favored by Downing Street, has garnered support from trade unions and constituency parties but faces a challenge from Powell, who leads in polling among party members. Phillipson, in her campaign launch in Sunderland, emphasized the need for party unity, promising to bring about the change desired by Labour supporters and defeat Reform. She highlighted the goal of providing hope to families across the nation and granting young people more opportunities for success.
