“Labour’s New Deputy Leader Vows to Uphold Core Values and Fight Child Poverty”

-

Prescott, Harman, Rayner. Esteemed Labour deputy leaders who embedded the party’s core values in government, backed by membership support and a place in the cabinet.

Stepping into their influential roles is a significant challenge that I am committed to embracing as the deputy leader. My focus will be on bolstering, not undermining, the current Labour administration while ensuring it stays true to the principles that inspired party members to join.

A key priority for me as deputy leader will be championing the cause of reducing child poverty, both as a moral imperative for the government and a personal commitment. I pledge to achieve tangible progress in this regard during this parliamentary term, leveraging the mandate granted to me to drive meaningful change.

Having experienced the hardships of growing up in poverty firsthand, my journey into politics has been fueled by a desire to make a difference. As the Education Secretary, I have prioritized leveling the playing field for working-class families by introducing initiatives like free breakfast clubs, expanding free school meal programs, and implementing subsidized childcare for children as young as 9 months old.

I have demonstrated a willingness to challenge entrenched interests to ensure that policies serve the needs of working people, such as advocating for redirecting resources from private schools to enhance funding for public education. This exemplifies the transformative impact a Labour government can have and underscores the choice to pursue power over protest.

Echoing the sentiments of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Labour conference, effecting change from within the system is a formidable task compared to merely demanding it. The Labour government’s legacy of lifting children out of poverty underscores the crucial role of governance in achieving meaningful societal progress.

Labour governments are tasked with addressing pressing issues like child welfare, public service funding, and national reconstruction, leaving no room for internal discord. Unity within the party is paramount at this critical juncture to secure electoral victories and drive positive change. With upcoming pivotal elections in Scotland, Wales, and across England, a cohesive Labour Party is essential to thwarting the divisive influence of figures like Farage and the far right.

In my capacity as deputy leader, entrusted with a mandate from the party’s membership, I am committed to fostering unity within Labour, upholding its core values in governance, and spearheading the battle against divisive forces like Farage and extremism.
