Man Caught Trying to Smuggle Human Remains for Ritual

-

At a bustling airport, a man was apprehended attempting to transport ‘human remains’ through security, claiming he intended to use them for a peculiar ritual.

Customs officials at Tampa International Airport in Florida uncovered fragments resembling a human skull and various bones in the luggage of a passenger who had initially only declared possession of 10 cigars. Alongside the bones, there were also “prohibited plants” found in the man’s suitcase, airport authorities revealed. Images taken after the confiscation depicted the bones wrapped in crumpled tinfoil, seemingly used to secure them in the luggage.

The bones were confiscated and destroyed due to being deemed a significant health hazard. Carlos C Martel, Director of Field Operations at the US Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Miami/Tampa Field Office, mentioned on social media, “What began with a passenger declaring only 10 cigars at TPA took a bizarre turn.”

“CBP Agriculture Specialists discovered prohibited plants, undeclared cigars, and a foil-wrapped duffel bag containing what appeared to be human remains, including a portion of a skull. Despite the traveler’s claim that the items were for rituals, they were seized and destroyed due to severe health risks.

“At CBP, we encounter various unexpected items in baggage, but smugglers should be aware that we are vigilant in our inspections.”

This incident is not the first time human remains have been found unexpectedly at an airport.

In a separate event in 2020, a woman and her daughter were detained at an airport after customs officers discovered a man’s remains in their baggage. The two women had placed the man’s bones inside a box within their suitcase with the intention of repatriating him to Armenia.

The women, aged 74 and 52, were traveling from Greece to Yerevan with a layover in Munich when German authorities made the unusual find. Customs officials, a doctor, and prosecutors were involved, determining that no criminal offense had occurred.

Additionally, in the past year, an airport employee recounted his astonishment after discovering a deceased woman on a luggage conveyor belt. Virginia Vinton, a 57-year-old mother of two, was found lifeless at O’Hare airport in Chicago by a Delta Airlines baggage handler.

The worker, speaking to US media, shared how he had inquired if the woman needed the belt turned off before sensing an unsettling vibe as he loaded bags onto the carousel. Upon calling out to her, ‘Hey, are you okay?’ he realized the woman was unresponsive.
