A man who was fatally stabbed during a reported altercation on a busy street has been identified and his image released for the first time.

The victim, Michael John Edwards, succumbed to his injuries after an incident in Southwark. The 43-year-old, hailing from Nuneaton, sustained severe injuries in the purported fight on Borough High Street in the early hours of Saturday, September 13. He passed away in the hospital four days later, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police.

Authorities have initiated a murder investigation into the case. Lewis Macleod, a resident of Sunderland, was formally charged with causing grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm on Monday, September 15. Following Mr. Edwards’ demise, the Crown Prosecution Service will review the charges against Macleod.

Appearing in court at Croydon Magistrates’ Court, Macleod has been detained in custody. Detective Inspector Andy Griffin, heading the inquiry, stated, “My team is swiftly working to uncover the complete circumstances surrounding Michael’s tragic death. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this challenging period, with ongoing support provided by specialized officers.”

Cllr Natasha Ennin, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Neighbourhoods, expressed her condolences, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of Michael Edwards, and my sympathies go out to his family, friends, and loved ones during this immensely difficult time. This was a tragic event, and we are cooperating with the police investigation to provide assistance and support to those impacted.”
