Mercedes has been advised to finalize a contract extension for Kimi Antonelli despite the young driver’s recent struggles. Antonelli, an 18-year-old Italian, had an impressive start to his Formula 1 career by finishing fourth in the Australian Grand Prix under challenging weather conditions.
After replacing Lewis Hamilton, Antonelli continued to show promise with consecutive sixth-place finishes in China and Japan. He further impressed by securing pole position in Miami and achieving his first podium at the Canadian Grand Prix.
However, Antonelli’s performance has fluctuated since the European season began, coinciding with the Mercedes car becoming more challenging to handle with upgrades. Despite scoring points with a ninth-place finish at Monza, team principal Toto Wolff criticized Antonelli’s race pace, expressing disappointment compared to previous races.
Wolff had previously confirmed that both Antonelli and George Russell would receive contract extensions to race for Mercedes in 2026. Yet, neither driver has signed a new deal. Commentator David Croft suggested that Mercedes should expedite the process to provide Antonelli with reassurance and support to boost his confidence.
Fans of Formula 1 can now enjoy live coverage of every practice, qualifying session, and race through Sky’s Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle, offering significant savings and including access to over 100 TV channels, Netflix, and Discovery+ subscriptions.
Former champion Nico Rosberg noted Wolff’s shift in approach at Monza, suggesting a need for patience and support for Antonelli without public criticism. Rosberg acknowledged Antonelli’s talent but highlighted the challenges the young driver is facing in his rookie year.
