A 35-year-old man, Jermaine Jabaar Typray Baker, was tragically shot and killed in Minneapolis by a 21-year-old suspect, Tyrone de Shun Childs Jr. The incident occurred during the early hours of August 27 on Hennepin Avenue. Childs allegedly attempted to rob Baker, who defiantly challenged him by saying, “You’re going to have to shoot me.” Subsequently, Childs fired 13 bullets at Baker, even shooting him multiple times while he was on the ground. After the shooting, Childs reportedly went through Baker’s belongings before casually walking away to the residence of a woman he shares a child with.
Crystal Henry-Smith, Baker’s mother, expressed a desire for justice following the tragic event. Childs has been charged with second-degree murder. Additionally, Minneapolis police mentioned that another individual was injured in the incident, although no further details were provided.
According to the authorities, Childs faces charges of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. Surveillance footage captured the entire sequence of events, showing Childs committing the robbery and murder. Following the crime, Childs changed clothes at the woman’s residence and left in a vehicle. Another person was also wounded in the shooting.
In a separate incident, a shooting at a homeless camp in Minneapolis resulted in eight people being injured, including four critically, on September 15. Earlier the same day, five individuals were wounded in a shooting near a transit station a few blocks away.
The city has also experienced other tragic events, including the assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, as well as the shooting of another state lawmaker and his wife on the same day in June. Furthermore, a mass shooting at a Minneapolis church in late August led to the death of two children and injuries to 21 others.
