“Mother of Three Killed in Brutal Crocodile Attack”

-

A tragic incident unfolded as a mother of three lost her life in a brutal crocodile attack, her partially consumed remains discovered on a riverbank a day later. The attack occurred during a mid-morning fishing attempt on September 19th, with witnesses recounting locals sounding an alarm and attempting to rescue the victim without success.

Santanu Kumar Dalei, a forest range officer in Mahakalapada, recounted how the unsuspecting woman, identified as Laxmi Dalei, was suddenly attacked and dragged into the water by the crocodile before she could react. The tragic event took place in the Gobari River near Bhitarkanika National Park under the Mahakalapada forest range in Odisha, India, an area known for its significant population of saltwater crocodiles.

Bhitarkanika, spanning approximately 404 miles across the Brahmani River and Baitarani River deltas, is home to 1,826 saltwater crocodiles. Officials emphasize that while crocodiles do not pose a threat to public safety as long as people avoid the waters, entering the water comes with inherent risks that cannot be fully mitigated.

Laxmi leaves behind her husband and three daughters, according to local reports. This tragic incident follows another deadly crocodile attack in Indonesia, where an 80-year-old man named Wasim was dragged under the water by a crocodile while bathing near his home in Sumatra. The villagers’ efforts to rescue him were in vain, with the crocodile eventually releasing his lifeless body after being confronted by locals armed with sticks.

Wasim’s family expressed shock over the sudden and tragic turn of events, highlighting the unexpected nature of the incident that led to his demise. The incidents serve as stark reminders of the dangers posed by wildlife encounters in certain regions, urging caution and awareness among residents.
