O2 has issued a new warning that could impact internet and messaging applications like WhatsApp for some users. The update comes ahead of the UK network’s transition away from its older 3G technology in more locations.
Virgin Media, which now includes O2, has already disabled the 3G signal in various areas such as Durham, Norwich, Telford, Guildford, Watford, and Torquay, with parts of Scotland next in line. Starting November 5, 2025, individuals with 3G-only devices will lose access to data services, preventing activities like sending emails, reading WhatsApp messages, and browsing websites without Wi-Fi. Basic phone calls and SMS texts will still function.
Residents in eastern regions like Aberdeen and Dundee will witness the initial phase of 3G shutdown. By the end of 2025, O2 plans to complete the 3G switch-off across the entire UK.
The decision to retire 3G stems from its outdated nature and inability to meet current demands, in addition to its high operating costs and bandwidth consumption that could be better utilized for superior 4G and 5G services. Unlike 3G’s limited 3Mbps speed, 4G and 5G can deliver speeds up to 100Mbps.
Most consumers are unlikely to be affected by the 3G phase-out, given the widespread adoption of 4G and 5G-capable devices. O2 is offering free 4G-ready devices to some 3G customers and discounted upgrades for those without compatible handsets or SIM cards. Other major networks like EE and Vodafone have already completed similar transitions to optimize network resources.
Virgin Media O2’s Chief Technology Officer, Jeanie York, emphasized the shift towards faster and more efficient 4G and 5G networks, highlighting the impending end of 3G as a step towards improved customer experiences. Customers without 4G or 5G devices, especially in Scotland, are encouraged to upgrade promptly to continue using mobile data post-3G shutdown.
