The main suspect linked to the case of Madeleine McCann is expected to be released from prison today. Christian Brueckner, a German national, is currently serving a seven-year sentence for the rape of an elderly woman in Praia da Luz, Portugal, back in 2005.
Reports indicate that Brueckner might be set free as early as today, September 17. He is anticipated to spend his final hours in Justizvollzugsanstalt Sehnde, a prison located in central Germany. Despite being approached by the Metropolitan Police for an interview before his release, Brueckner has consistently denied any connection to Madeleine’s disappearance.
Madeleine went missing at the age of three from the resort town of Praia da Luz in 2007, shortly after her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, left her alone to have dinner at a nearby restaurant.
German prosecutors claim that phone records show Brueckner received a call on the day Madeleine vanished near the holiday apartment in Praia da Luz. However, Brueckner insists he was elsewhere with a young German woman during that time.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell, a key figure in the Metropolitan Police’s investigation, has stated that despite not being able to interview Brueckner, they will persist in exploring all possible leads.
Efforts to uncover evidence related to Madeleine’s disappearance have been fruitless so far. The suspect was cleared of separate sexual offenses in Portugal between 2000 and 2017 by a German court last year.
