“Ronan’s Law: Banning Ninja Swords, Saving Lives”

-

On a summer evening, June 29, 2022, tragedy struck as my son, Ronan, was ambushed and fatally stabbed by two 16-year-old boys wielding a 22-inch ninja sword. The weapon used in this brutal attack had been purchased online with a fake ID, raising concerns about the irresponsible sale of deadly weapons.

After the devastating loss of my son, I sought answers and change. Meeting with Sir Keir Starmer, then Leader of the Opposition, I found a listening ear and a commitment to righting this wrong. Together, we tackled the issue of retailers selling dangerous weapons without accountability.

Under the leadership of the Labour Government, swift action was taken to ban ninja swords through Ronan’s Law, which also includes measures to penalize online platforms for hosting knife-related content and enforce stricter regulations on knife sales to minors.

Through collaborative efforts with the government and various organizations, an amnesty scheme was launched to collect dangerous weapons, resulting in a significant number of surrenders across high-risk areas. Additionally, initiatives like the Young Futures program aim to prevent violence by addressing root causes and supporting at-risk youth.

The impact of Ronan’s Law and related measures has been substantial, leading to a notable decrease in knife-enabled crimes. This progress demonstrates the effectiveness of unified efforts between communities and the government in combatting violence.

As a grieving mother turned advocate, I am grateful for the government’s support in enacting meaningful change and honoring my son’s memory. Moving forward, it is crucial for the government to maintain its momentum in addressing knife crime and continuing to collaborate with stakeholders for lasting impact.

The legacy of Ronan’s Law is profound, reflecting a commitment to safeguarding our communities and preventing future tragedies. I urge the government to persevere in its mission to reduce knife crime and build a safer future for our youth.
