Snooker icon Ronnie O’Sullivan has acknowledged that he is becoming more discerning in selecting his engagements, recognizing that his high-level career might be nearing its end. This shift in focus has led him to prioritize tournament appearances over exhibition matches.
Turning 50 in December, O’Sullivan, a seven-time world champion who recently clinched victory at The Crucible in 2022, has opted out of several events in the 2025/26 season. Despite this, he managed to advance to the final of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters in August, narrowly losing to Neil Robertson.
While exhibition games offer significant financial rewards for top players, O’Sullivan has chosen to forego them in favor of concentrating on competitive tournaments. He explained that juggling both was proving to be too demanding.
Expressing awareness of the potential conclusion of his career, O’Sullivan emphasized the importance of maximizing his remaining time in the sport. With the backing of sponsors easing financial pressures, he aims to focus solely on tournament preparation and rediscovering his passion for the game.
After grappling with jetlag due to a hectic schedule, O’Sullivan has relocated to Dubai to facilitate his participation in Asian tournaments. One such upcoming event is the Xi’an Grand Prix in China, where he reached the semi-finals last year.
Regarding his decision to move away from the UK, O’Sullivan shared that this transition had been on his mind for some time. Following his loss in the World Snooker Championship semi-finals in May, he hinted at a fresh start abroad, underscoring the significance of broader life considerations beyond the sport.
By fostering partnerships and maintaining sponsor support, O’Sullivan remains committed to playing competitively, striving to reignite his enduring love for snooker.
