“Severe Flooding Shuts Down M62, Causes Traffic Chaos”

-

Flooding caused disruptions on a major highway yesterday evening, leading to extensive traffic congestion due to heavy rainfall and strong winds across the region. The M62 was shut down near Huddersfield because of the downpour, resulting in lane closures and a buildup of traffic in the westbound direction shortly after a yellow weather warning was issued by the Met Office.

In addition to national alerts, the Met Office specifically highlighted risks along the M62, cautioning about potential damage from the combination of heavy rains and strong winds. Traffic conditions on the M62 are gradually improving, as indicated by the AA’s updated maps that no longer show the section in amber, signifying traffic congestion.

The adverse weather conditions have impacted various roads in the area, with reports of flooding across England, including the M56, M6, M61, and A50, all facing severe conditions according to Traffic England. Motorists have been advised by the Met Office to take necessary precautions while driving on the affected routes.

The agency emphasized the importance of checking road conditions and adjusting travel plans accordingly to avoid delays. Traffic England highlighted the severity of the situation, citing flooding at junctions J24 and J22. The Met Office reiterated warnings of severe weather affecting the M62 corridor and Pennine regions, with heavy rain and strong winds potentially causing travel disruptions and damage.

The closure of the M62 aligns with previous forecasts from the Met Office, predicting heavy rainfall particularly in the Midlands and northern England. The forecast detailed a slow-moving band of heavy rain across Wales and parts of England, expected to progress eastward, with conditions improving by early Sunday.
