Nintendo has unveiled a sneak peek of the highly awaited The Legend of Zelda movie, revealing the appearance of the game’s iconic main characters.
The creator of Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto, shared images from the film’s production in New Zealand, offering a first glimpse of Princess Zelda and the series’ protagonist, Link.
Miyamoto generated excitement among fans by posting three images on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing key details that enthusiasts quickly noticed. He announced that filming for the live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is progressing in a lush, natural environment in New Zealand, with Bo Bragason-san cast as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san as Link.
The film is scheduled for release on May 7, 2027, with Miyamoto urging fans to patiently await the premiere.
Social media erupted with reactions from supporters, with many praising the authenticity of the character depictions. One user expressed admiration for the faithful representation, blending elements from different eras of the game to appeal to a wide fan base.
References to the popular game, Breath of the Wild, were spotted by Reddit users, who eagerly anticipate the film’s blend of elements from various Zelda titles.
Production in New Zealand is ongoing under the direction of Wes Ball, with leaked footage suggesting that Dichen Lachman from Severance will take on the role of Impa, Zelda’s trusted guardian.
While The Legend of Zelda has a vast gaming history, its presence in film has been limited. The upcoming 2027 movie marks Nintendo’s return to live-action filmmaking after nearly four decades, following the poorly received 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie.
Nintendo’s characters have predominantly appeared in animated features since then, with the next anticipated movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, set for a 2026 release. The 2027 Zelda film will be a significant milestone, reintroducing the beloved franchise to the big screen for the first time since the 1989 animated series.
