“Teen Cancer Survivor Advocates for Better Brain Tumor Care”

-

Indi Powell bravely fought through a series of challenging surgeries, therapies, and medical trials following her diagnosis with an aggressive form of rapidly growing brain cancer four years ago. The 18-year-old is now sharing her journey to shed light on the limited funding and treatment options available in the UK for families dealing with similar diagnoses.

Powell first noticed severe headaches at the age of 14 while living in the United States. Initially attributing them to stress or minor causes, it wasn’t until 2021 that a pediatrician discovered a large tumor in her brain during an MRI scan.

Diagnosed with a grade four glioblastoma, Powell underwent a lengthy surgery to remove the tumor. Despite facing challenges in speech and motor skills post-surgery, she embarked on a rigorous treatment regimen, including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, clinical trials, and additional brain surgery.

Participating in a T-cell infusion therapy trial in Washington DC provided Powell with hope and motivation to continue her fight against cancer. Now back in the UK and pursuing her education, she emphasizes the critical need for enhanced research funding and access to advanced treatments within the country.

Brain tumors, particularly affecting individuals under 40, receive minimal research funding in the UK despite their high fatality rates. With over 100 different types of brain tumors, tackling this complex disease presents significant challenges.

Powell has teamed up with Brain Tumour Research, a leading charity dedicated to supporting long-term research initiatives at specialized centers. The organization aims to advocate for improved treatments, early detection, and ultimately, a cure for brain tumors, ensuring that individuals have access to life-saving care close to home.
