“UK Deports Migrant to France Under ‘One in, One Out’ Deal”

-

A migrant has been repatriated to France as part of a new ‘one in one out’ agreement, marking a significant development following negotiations between the UK and French President Emmanuel Macron. The individual, an Indian national who arrived via a small boat last month, was flown back on Thursday morning.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood praised this initial deportation as a crucial step forward, with more flights expected in the coming days. According to the terms of the deal, asylum seekers undertaking perilous sea crossings will face removal while an equal number of individuals with valid claims will be permitted entry.

Mahmood emphasized the message being sent to those attempting illegal entry into the UK, stating, “If you enter the UK unlawfully, we will take action to remove you.” She expressed determination to counter any last-minute legal challenges impeding deportations, underlining the UK’s commitment to assisting genuine refugees through safe and legal channels rather than risky journeys.

The recent repatriation comes after a temporary suspension was granted to an Eritrean man due to a legal challenge, prompting the Home Office to appeal for a limited timeframe to provide evidence. Enver Solomon, Chief Executive of Refugee Council, raised concerns about the effectiveness of the agreement, stressing the importance of fair and competent implementation.

Solomon urged safeguards for vulnerable groups such as trafficking survivors and children, calling for a comprehensive strategy targeting human traffickers and expanding secure pathways for refugees. He criticized the suspension of family reunion visas for refugees, particularly affecting women and children seeking safety in the UK.

A report suggested that increasing returns under the agreement with France could significantly reduce small boat crossings by 75% within three years. Former Labour Home Secretary Charles Clarke advocated for a practical and compassionate approach, citing public support for allowing up to 50,000 asylum seekers into the UK through a balanced ‘one in, one out’ scheme.

While the initial cap is set at 50 individuals per week, British Future recommends scaling up this intake to address the evolving situation. The Home Office anticipates imminent deportations, although faced with a setback as the High Court temporarily blocked one of the planned repatriations.

A report by British Future proposed a larger-scale intake of refugees as part of a controlled process, potentially garnering public approval and effectively reducing unauthorized crossings. The analysis highlighted parallels with former US President Joe Biden’s successful reduction of illegal border crossings by 81% through a similar strategy.
