Three lions in Ukraine, left frightened by shelling, are set to be relocated to the UK thanks to the intervention of Yorkshire Wildlife Park. A fundraising campaign has successfully collected over £20,000 for their specialized transportation costs. The lions, named Oleg, Rafael, and Shanti, are approximately one year old and have faced challenging circumstances.
Oleg, initially raised by humans, yearns for companionship with other lions after being rescued as a cub from private owners who fled the Sumy region during wartime. Meanwhile, siblings Rafael and Shanti were discovered in the Kharkiv region beside their emaciated mother, a lioness abandoned in a neglected private zoo.
Efforts to evacuate the lions from the Kyiv Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre have been urgent due to ongoing shelling, causing distress to the animals. The Yorkshire Wildlife Park spokesperson confirmed that the necessary funds have been secured, and arrangements are in progress for the lions’ transfer to the safety of the park in Doncaster.
The Wildlife Foundation, associated with the park, initiated the appeal to support the rescue and 2000-mile journey of the lions to their new permanent residence. This marks the third lion rescue by Yorkshire Wildlife Park, renowned for providing a home to 17 lions in its Lion Country habitat.
Cheryl Williams, a trustee of The Wildlife Foundation, expressed gratification for the opportunity to save these lions and provide them with a better life. The foundation’s contributions have been vital in enabling the rescue, transportation, and rehabilitation of these majestic animals.
Plans are underway for Oleg, Rafael, and Shanti to be integrated into a pride at the park, offering them a chance to thrive and interact with their kind. The successful history of lion rescues at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, including the renowned case of Aysa and her cubs, reflects the commitment to animal welfare and conservation efforts.
CEO John Minion expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming lion arrivals and pride in the park’s continued dedication to rescuing and caring for these magnificent creatures. The support received through donations has been instrumental in fulfilling the mission of saving the three lions and providing them with a safe and nurturing environment.
