A recent scam targeting WhatsApp users is posing a threat to their sensitive data. With the increasing sophistication of scammers and hackers, it has become challenging to distinguish fake messages or emails that may compromise personal information. One such scam, known as the “ghost pairing scam,” is currently active on WhatsApp, prompting users to be cautious about incoming messages on the platform.
The scam came to light when a social media user named Caroline shared a video on TikTok warning about the scam’s implications. According to Caroline, falling for this deceptive trick could grant hackers remote access to your data. She explained that the scam involves receiving a message that appears legitimate, either from WhatsApp itself warning about account security or from a known contact asking for a code to be sent back.
By forwarding the received code as instructed, users inadvertently link their WhatsApp account to the scammer’s device. This allows unauthorized access to messages, photos, and the ability to send messages on the user’s behalf without their knowledge. Shockingly, the scam does not prompt users out of their own WhatsApp accounts, making it harder to detect the breach.
To safeguard against such scams, users should never share WhatsApp codes with anyone. WhatsApp never requests users to send back codes, and if someone in their contacts demands a code sent by mistake, users should advise them to resend it to their own number and avoid sharing any received codes. Additionally, users can monitor their linked devices in the app settings to identify any unrecognized devices and immediately log them out or remove them from their account.
Caroline’s video received appreciation from viewers who were grateful for the awareness. Many expressed surprise at the existence of the scam and pledged to inform their older family members to prevent them from falling prey to it. Some shared personal experiences of encountering the scam but taking precautionary measures to block the threat.
