“Retail Workers at Risk as Business Rates Overhaul Looms”

-

Retail workers are cautioned against bearing the brunt of business rates restructuring, as Rachel Reeves receives a joint plea from the shop workers union Usdaw and the British Retail Consortium. With nearly 3 million people employed in British retail, the industry has witnessed significant job losses and shop closures over the past decade.

Labour has vowed to revamp business rates to revitalize high streets, proposing a permanent reduction for retail, hospitality, and leisure properties starting next year. However, concerns arise that larger shops may face increased rates, potentially leading to reduced working hours, more closed stores, and job losses.

Usdaw and the British Retail Consortium emphasize the need to shield shops from heightened business rates and suggest augmenting rates for large non-retail premises like office buildings. They highlight the repercussions of cost hikes, warning that increased prices could burden consumers, ultimately affecting working-class individuals.

The Government is urged to prioritize fairness in the Autumn Budget, safeguarding retail jobs and enhancing living standards without compromising the welfare of retail workers. The Treasury plans to implement lower tax rates for retail, hospitality, and leisure properties from April, funded by higher rates on a small fraction of the most valuable business properties, aiming to support small businesses and foster investment.
