Germany has accused Russia of actively tracking its satellites in outer space. Speaking at a press briefing, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius highlighted the escalating space warfare capabilities of both China and Russia.
Pistorius disclosed that two Russian satellites are tailing German military assets orbiting the Earth. These satellites have been shadowing the Intelsat satellite utilized by the German armed forces, as well as by several other nations such as the UK, Australia, and the US. He urged global leaders to initiate discussions on establishing a space defense mechanism to counter the recent aggressive actions of China and Russia.
Simultaneously, NATO is preparing to counter additional Russian intrusions following numerous drone and cyber assaults believed to be linked to the Kremlin. In a recent incident, Denmark reached out to NATO regarding a drone attack at Aalborg Airport, resulting in flight diversions as the airspace was temporarily closed due to drone activity.
Authorities reported the presence of drones with illuminated lights near Aalborg airport, prompting a police investigation. While Denmark has informed NATO about the incursion, it has not confirmed whether it has invoked Article 4, a provision allowing member states to address perceived threats to their territorial sovereignty, distinct from Article 5 concerning collective defense obligations.
The activation of Article 4 was demonstrated recently by Estonia after three Russian fighter jets breached its airspace. Western leaders have issued resolute statements, cautioning Russia that NATO stands prepared to respond if airspace violations persist.
Following the breach of Estonian airspace, NATO chief Mark Rutte emphasized the organization’s readiness to take necessary action if required, including the potential interception of unauthorized aircraft. Similarly, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and former US President Donald Trump have voiced readiness to confront Russian provocations, with Trump suggesting the interception of Russian aircraft if needed.
