“UK Schools Lockdown After Gun Sighting in Town”

-

Several schools in a UK town were put on lockdown following reports of an individual with a firearm this afternoon. Police were alerted to the situation in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, where a suspicious man was seen carrying a gun in the town center around 3:15 pm. Local schools, including Byrchall High School, Cansfield, and St Oswald’s RC Primary, activated safety protocols, keeping students inside. Nearby shops were also temporarily closed in response to the incident.

A parent of a student at one of the affected schools mentioned that access to the school was restricted, with students taking cover inside while law enforcement responded extensively. Parents and guardians of Byrchall High School students received a message explaining the lockdown situation, ensuring that all students were secure and under staff supervision within the school premises.

According to Greater Manchester Police, officers were called to Gerard Street in Ashton-in-Makerfield following a suspected firearm sighting. No injuries were reported, and armed officers, along with neighborhood patrols, responded to the incident. Two individuals were stopped and searched, but no firearms were found.
