“Lidl Introduces Self-Scanning Feature to Reduce Checkout Times”

-

Lidl has introduced a new self-scanning feature in its loyalty app aimed at reducing checkout waiting times for customers. The update allows shoppers to scan items using their smartphones before finalizing their purchases at the checkout counter. Initially tested in a limited “friends and family” trial at four stores, the feature is expected to be rolled out more widely next year.

The supermarket chain has filed a trademark for “Lidl & Go” in Europe and the UK, signaling its focus on digital payment and scan-and-shop systems within its stores. Shyam Unarket, Customer Relations Director at Lidl GB, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing the customer experience through technological advancements, offering flexibility in shopping methods.

In a recent comparison, Lidl was named the cheapest supermarket by Which? for the second time in recent months, edging out competitor Aldi. A basket of 70 items at Lidl averaged £120.46 in October, slightly lower for Lidl Plus members at £120.38, while the same items at Aldi averaged £121. Aldi has held the title of the cheapest supermarket 22 times in the last 24 months according to Which? analysis.

For Tesco shoppers, the average cost for a similar basket of items was £134.89, or £133.38 with a Clubcard, while the total bill at Sainsbury’s was £139.68, reduced to £136.79 with a Nectar card. Aldi and Lidl were not included in a comparison of 187 items due to their smaller product range compared to other supermarkets.
