A 70-year-old woman selflessly donated her kidney to her son, who expressed his gratitude by calling her his hero. Gill Raggett, a procurement consultant and social media influencer, stepped forward to help her son Luke, 32, who was battling kidney failure and needed a transplant due to polycystic kidney disease (PKD).
Despite her age, Gill was deemed a perfect match and underwent the donation shortly after turning 70. Both mother and son are now on the road to recovery and are considering participating in future Transplant Games as avid swimmers.
Following a successful surgery, Luke now has three kidneys, with his mother’s kidney working alongside his own. The duo decided to share their story in honor of Organ Donation Week, urging others to consider the increasing number of individuals awaiting kidney transplants.
Luke, a social media influencer with a significant following, expressed his gratitude towards his mother for her selfless act, emphasizing the positive impact it has had on his life. The close bond between the two has only grown stronger through this experience, with Luke planning to return to competitive swimming at the Transplant Games.
Reflecting on the experience, Gill, a former leisure center receptionist and swimming teacher, highlighted the importance of organ donation and encouraged others to explore this life-changing option. The family’s journey underscores the critical role of living donors in saving lives and restoring hope to those in need of organ transplants.
As they continue to recover and adjust to their new normal, Gill and Luke are grateful for the opportunity to support each other through challenging times. Their story serves as a testament to the profound impact of organ donation and the potential to transform lives through acts of kindness and generosity.
