A man in Spring Hills, Florida, was taken into custody following the hospitalization of his elderly mother, who was found in a distressing state covered in human waste and maggots. Jason Thomas Russell, 47, contacted emergency services after discovering his 79-year-old mother bleeding from an elbow wound at their residence on September 18. He reported her condition as concerning, mentioning her open eyes and snoring.
Upon arrival at the hospital, medical staff were shocked by the elderly woman’s deplorable physical condition, noting numerous open sores and a maggot infestation. Tragically, she passed away two days after being admitted. Fire Rescue personnel responding to the scene observed Russell retrieving alcohol from the garage and obstructing their access to the house, preventing them from reaching the mother’s medication.
Russell’s resistance to allowing law enforcement to secure the crime scene led to his arrest. During police questioning, he claimed his mother refused his assistance and medical care, stating that her health had deteriorated over the past six months. According to reports from Law and Crime, Russell indicated that his mother had declined hospital visits despite his attempts to help her.
Authorities revealed that Russell was his mother’s primary caregiver and was charged with elder abuse, neglect, and resisting an officer without violence. He is currently detained at the Hernando County Detention Center and is scheduled for arraignment at the end of the upcoming month. Inside the home, deputies found unsanitary conditions, including soiled furniture, a strong ammonia smell, and unhygienic living arrangements for the mother’s care.
