Lidl, the popular supermarket chain, is expanding its offerings by venturing into the mobile phone industry with budget-friendly plans to compete with established networks. To access these deals, customers will need a Lidl Plus account. This move comes as part of a significant £600 million investment, which includes the opening of 50 new stores nationwide.
Following the footsteps of other non-traditional competitors like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl aims to introduce affordable phone plans in the UK, US, France, and Spain. The supermarket already provides this service in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Schwarz Group, the owner of Lidl, has partnered with 1GLOBAL communications provider to operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), utilizing existing infrastructure for its mobile services.
Moreover, Lidl is not only expanding its technological ventures but also planning to open over 50 new stores in the next year, generating 2,000 job opportunities. This expansion, part of the £600 million investment plan, will include new locations in various regions such as Abbots Langley, Warrington, and Thornbury.
Ryan McDonnell, the CEO of Lidl GB, expressed the company’s commitment to benefiting British communities through job creation and regional growth. Additionally, Schwarz Group will acquire a 9.9% stake in 1GLOBAL, enhancing its digital strategy and presence in the telecom industry.
The group’s broader digital vision includes investments in cloud computing, cybersecurity, and AI start-ups through Schwarz Digits. Analysts predict that Lidl’s entry into new markets could pose a challenge to established telecom providers due to competitive pricing and convenience. Employment Minister Kate Dearden lauded this investment for creating quality jobs and improving standards of living across the country.
