Russia has been reported to utilize oil tankers as large maritime platforms for launching drone attacks against European nations, as warned by Kyiv. This development follows Ukraine’s response to Russia’s recent assaults on Kyiv, which included the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl.
President Zelensky emphasized the necessity of imposing sanctions that would significantly impact Russia’s energy trade and its tanker fleet infrastructure. Recent intelligence indicates that Russians are deploying these tankers to operate drones targeting European countries. Zelensky urged Europe to prevent Russian vessels from accessing regional waters in light of these revelations.
Reports have surfaced of unidentified drones flying over or near military installations and critical infrastructure in several European countries, including Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland, and others. These incidents have raised concerns of potential “hybrid” operations associated with Russia, with fears that the Kremlin could unleash swarms of drones from oil tankers, posing challenges to European air defenses.
The heightened tensions come amidst escalating fears of Russia’s aggressive stance towards Eastern European nations and the possibility of an imminent attack. In Denmark, police reported the sighting of one or two drones near the Karup military base, a critical installation housing various armed forces assets.
Zelensky’s warning follows a recent deadly attack by Russia that claimed at least four lives in Ukraine, with Kyiv bearing the brunt of the assault. This incident marked the most significant bombardment since a previous air attack in Kyiv that resulted in the deaths of at least 21 individuals.
US Vice President JD Vance mentioned that the US was contemplating supplying Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine. Following the Sunday attack, Ukraine’s air force revealed that Russia had launched 595 exploding drones and decoys along with 48 missiles, of which the majority were intercepted or neutralized.
During the assault on various regions in Ukraine, including Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa, at least 70 individuals sustained injuries. Notably, a 12-year-old girl was among the casualties, underscoring the tragic impact of the violence on civilians.
Amidst the ongoing turmoil, Zelensky condemned the attack as a ruthless act by Russia, urging for robust international pressure on Moscow. The US administration is evaluating Ukraine’s request for Tomahawk cruise missiles, which could significantly enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
Residents in Kyiv expressed shock and dismay at the relentless attacks on the capital, with one witness describing a darkened sky and the harrowing aftermath of the strikes. The assault not only resulted in casualties but also triggered defensive responses in neighboring countries like Poland, where fighter jets were deployed as a precautionary measure against potential threats from Russia.
The Kremlin has consistently maintained that its military targets only combatant sites, although the recent attacks have raised global concerns over the escalating conflict. As the situation unfolds, international efforts are underway to address the crisis and prevent further escalation of violence.
