An alert of significance has been dispatched to numerous Gmail users, prompting attention for those who are uneasy about artificial intelligence scanning their emails. The recent warning was shared online by American television personality and businessperson Lori Greiner.
Over the weekend, the Shark Tank celebrity relayed a message on Instagram, urging Gmail account holders to pay heed. The message emphasized the importance of sharing the information with friends and family to ensure their safety and vigilance.
The concern arises from Google’s introduction of new AI smart functionalities intended to analyze inboxes and provide services like intelligent searches, contextual responses, and email synopses. Although Google asserts that it does not read messages for personal purposes, Greiner remains apprehensive.
In her Instagram post, Greiner cautioned, “Do not overlook this alert if you use a Gmail account.” She expressed unease about Google’s AI scanning all email content, including financial records, tax details, and personal dialogues without users’ knowledge.
If this revelation is disconcerting, there is no need to panic as disabling this setting is straightforward.
Greiner reassured, “The good news is you can deactivate it within 30 seconds.” To turn off AI in Gmail, follow these steps:
1. Access Settings and select “see all settings.”
2. Locate “Smart features” and deactivate it in Gmail, Chat, and Meet to halt message scanning by Google.
3. Additionally, deselect the options for Workspace and other products in “Manage Workspace Smart Features” to completely restrict data usage by AI.
Google maintains that personal data is not viewed by its staff or third parties, emphasizing the security of the system. The tech company clarifies that its foundational AI models are not trained on personal emails, and any access granted is limited to specific tasks like summarizing emails.
For those wary of AI, unchecking the smart feature box in Gmail may be a prudent choice.
