A man known as a “bake and run” thief was captured on video stealing baguettes from a local bakery chain store. Darren Humphreys, aged 59, was caught after police found him with mayonnaise from a sandwich spread on his face. He repeatedly targeted the same bakery for baguettes and sausage rolls, as revealed in court proceedings.
Surveillance footage displayed Humphreys reaching into the bakery’s fridge before nonchalantly grabbing a bottle of coke on a specific date. He then walked out of the store without making any payment. In a separate incident, Humphreys was reported to have pushed a staff member when confronted while stealing baguettes.
Despite denying the charges against him, Humphreys was found guilty after a trial where multiple witnesses testified. The prosecution detailed the series of thefts, with Humphreys stealing various items on different dates. One police officer testified to recognizing Humphreys from previous encounters.
During the court proceedings, Humphreys chose not to present any evidence and made a statement expressing contentment with the legal process. He was ultimately convicted on all charges, leading to the discussion of a Criminal Behaviour Order banning him from entering any stores of the bakery chain in the region. The court also discussed financial penalties, adjourning the case for sentencing at a later date.
