In my role as a social worker, I have been actively involved in public services for many years. Despite being under a Labour government for 18 months now, the situation for my fellow workers remains dire.
Our salaries have continuously decreased while the cost of living has soared. Additionally, we have witnessed the systematic dismantling of essential services that were once the backbone of our communities.
Throughout my career within a local authority, I have witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects of asset-stripping, with £15 billion worth of assets sold off since 2010. In my hometown of Bolton, the council’s funding has been slashed by more than a quarter in the same period, impacting the lives of ordinary citizens.
Despite promises of national renewal, Labour has not been successful in addressing these issues. To truly govern in the spirit of labor, the party needs to prioritize the well-being of the working class above all else, without fear of external influences.
It is crucial for Labour to focus on improving living standards by increasing wages and reducing expenses. Implementing measures like an inflation-proof pay rise for public workers and introducing an Employment Rights Bill 2.0 can be significant steps in the right direction.
As the general secretary of UNISON, I am committed to advocating for the working class and striving for better conditions for public sector workers. It is time for a shift in priorities, with a stronger emphasis on investing in public services rather than unnecessary conflicts.
Addressing the current challenges requires a reevaluation of government spending, with a focus on rebuilding social structures and revitalizing industries. By placing labor at the forefront, Labour can truly make a positive impact on people’s lives.
As we enter a new year filled with hope and possibilities, it is essential to recognize and support individuals like Heba Muraisi, Teuta Hoxha, Kamran Ahmed, and Lewie Chiaramello, who are courageously standing up against injustice.
The ongoing situation in Venezuela demands condemnation of unlawful actions and a clear stance against violations of international law. It is imperative for political leaders to distance themselves from such acts of aggression and prioritize diplomacy over conflict.
By fostering unity and solidarity within our communities, we can work towards a brighter future for all, where the interests of the majority are always put first. Let us strive for a society where labor is valued and respected, leading to meaningful progress and positive change.
