-

Don Nelson, the second-most victorious coach in NBA history and a five-time NBA champion with the Boston Celtics, passed away at the age of 86 on Sunday. The family confirmed his passing in a statement that did not disclose the location or cause of death.

Nelson, known for his coaching achievements with Milwaukee, Dallas, and Golden State, was a pioneer in introducing the point forward concept and an up-tempo style of offense that revolutionized the game. He credited Celtics legend Red Auerbach for inspiring his innovative coaching approach.

During his illustrious career, Nelson amassed over 250 wins with three different franchises, serving also as a general manager. He garnered three Coach of the Year awards and led his teams to the playoffs 18 times in 31 seasons. Despite not winning an NBA title as a coach, Nelson’s impact on the game was profound.

His coaching legacy includes guiding the Milwaukee Bucks to seven consecutive division titles and achieving remarkable comebacks, such as overcoming a significant deficit against Atlanta. Nelson’s tenure with Golden State showcased his fast-paced offenses, notably during the “Run TMC” era with star players like Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin.

Nelson’s influence extended beyond coaching as he played a pivotal role in developing top talents like Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash, who went on to achieve great success in the NBA. His coaching career culminated with various accolades, including induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.

Born in Muskegon, Michigan, Nelson pursued a successful basketball career and later transitioned into coaching, leaving an indelible mark on the sport. His contributions to the game and coaching innovations will be remembered and celebrated by basketball enthusiasts worldwide.
