Filmmaker Ally Pankiw Rejects “Harry Potter” TV Offer amid Transphobia Concerns

-

Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw declined an offer to direct an upcoming television adaptation of the “Harry Potter” series, citing opposition to supporting transphobia. Pankiw took to Instagram to share a text conversation where she bluntly rejected the opportunity to work on the HBO production.

Expressing her stance against funding transphobic content, Pankiw emphasized how straightforward it was for her to decline the directing job. Notably, she clarified that her decision pertained to directing and not acting roles.

Having previously directed episodes for renowned series such as “Black Mirror” and the entire first season of “Feel Good,” as well as the 2023 film “I Used to be Funny,” Pankiw’s portfolio showcases her experience in the industry.

Scheduled for release on HBO Max on December 25, 2026, the new series, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is adapted from J.K. Rowling’s beloved fantasy book series. The show, set to stream on Crave in Canada, has garnered attention due to Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues.

Rowling has faced backlash for her statements on gender and sex, including a tweet supporting Maya Forstater in 2019 and subsequent writings defending her beliefs. Her opinions have sparked division within the “Harry Potter” community, extending to actors from the film franchise and partnerships with brands like Tim Hortons.

Joining Pankiw in declining involvement with the series, director and writer Kate Herron shared her own experience of turning down offers to work on the project. Herron, known for her work on “Loki” and other popular series, commended Pankiw’s decision and emphasized her own unwavering refusal.

While representatives for Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO, have not commented on potential challenges in production due to refusals, inquiries to Pankiw’s team regarding further details on the text exchange remain unanswered.
