A recent report from The Wrap revealed that the horror film “Obsession” has surpassed the $500 million mark at the global box office, making it the first original movie of the 2020s to achieve this milestone. This success has positioned “Obsession” as the highest-grossing original film post-pandemic, surpassing Pixar’s “Elemental.”
The micro-budget film, which revolves around a woman consumed by obsession after a supernatural wish, was produced with a budget of only $750,000. This makes it the highest-grossing film ever made for less than $1 million, outperforming the iconic film “Enter the Dragon.”
Directed by Curry Barker, “Obsession” saw a consistent increase in weekly grosses during its initial release weeks, a rare feat since “E.T.” The film grossed $263.4 million domestically and $238.1 million internationally by the end of its U.S. theatrical run, totaling over $501.5 million globally.
Despite its already impressive achievements, “Obsession” is yet to be released in South Korea. The film’s success has not only broken box office records but has also opened doors for the young cast members. Lead actors Inde Navarette and Michael Johnston are already landing roles in major projects, with Navarette set to star as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming “X-Men” film, and Johnston in talks to join the cast of Universal’s new “The Mummy” movie.
The remarkable success of “Obsession” is paving the way for Barker’s next project, a horror film titled “Anything but Ghosts,” in which he will also star alongside co-writer Cooper Tomlinson.
