A bald eagle found drenched and grounded at a Brantford, Ont., landfill has been rescued and is now under care at a wildlife rehabilitation center. The bird, resembling a soaked rat, was saved by bylaw officers after being trapped in the landfill during heavy rains in Ontario. It is common for eagles to scavenge at garbage dumps.
Supervisor Ian Harrower shared the challenging rescue mission, involving around six individuals who had to work strategically to capture the stubborn bird. The bird’s inability to fly led to a unique rescue operation involving dirt bikes and foot pursuit to corner and cover the eagle with jackets.
The entire rescue process at the landfill lasted about 40 minutes, and the bird was eventually taken to a wildlife refuge for further treatment. Fortunately, the eagle did not suffer a broken wing as initially feared. The successful rescue was a collaborative effort involving various parties, including the landfill staff, bylaw department, and animal control.
The eagle, currently under the care of the Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge, is expected to fully recover in two to four weeks. Despite encountering challenges due to mysterious substances affecting its feathers, the bird is receiving proper care and attention from the wildlife custodians. The refuge, dependent on community donations, provides shelter and rehabilitation for various wildlife species.
