Tens of thousands of music enthusiasts gathered at Great Park in Irvine, California, last weekend to enjoy live performances by their favorite artists at a groundbreaking event aimed at supporting women’s health, reproductive rights, and the fight against gender-based violence.
The Daisy Chain Fields charity festival, organized by pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo, drew inspiration from the iconic Lilith Fair of the 1990s, featuring an all-female lineup that included a mix of emerging stars and established acts like Bikini Kill and Garbage.
Before kicking off the event, Rodrigo revealed that they had successfully raised $10 million for the festival’s 10 nonprofit partners, such as Planned Parenthood and the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. This amount was generously matched by Melinda French Gates, resulting in a grand total of $20 million raised for the cause.
Rodrigo had initially announced the festival in June, emphasizing that all participating artists would perform for free, with proceeds going entirely towards organizations supporting women and girls. The event saw special guest appearances by music legends like Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morissette, and Sarah McLachlan, who all shared the stage with Rodrigo during their performances.
Named after the concept of unity and strength in collective efforts, Rodrigo explained that “Daisy Chain” symbolized the coming together of individual elements to create a resilient whole. The festival’s timing was especially poignant given the ongoing challenges to reproductive rights in the United States following the repeal of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
In the face of these challenges, Rodrigo and fellow artists and activists at Daisy Chain Fields expressed hope and unity, showcasing the power of music and community in driving positive change. The festival featured a diverse lineup of 14 acts, captivating attendees with not just music but also various art installations and interactive exhibits.
Amid scorching temperatures exceeding 33°C, festival-goers like Chase Martinez hailed Daisy Chain Fields as the “best festival ever,” praising its inclusive and philanthropic atmosphere. The event’s focus on supporting nonprofit organizations dedicated to women’s rights left a lasting impact on attendees, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.
Reflecting on the success of the festival, partner organizations like FreeFrom and the Center for Reproductive Rights expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and solidarity.
