“Syrians Protest for Justice After Man’s Death in Custody”

-

Syrian citizens have demonstrated this week demanding justice for the death of Mohammad Ghamira, a Syrian man who passed away in a hospital following alleged mistreatment by security forces during his detention. This incident occurred less than two years after the new government pledged to depart from the prevalent arbitrary detentions and abuse under the previous regime.

Ghamira, a 29-year-old father of two, had hemophilia, a rare genetic disorder affecting blood clotting. He was detained for three days before being released on August 9 and immediately hospitalized. Tragically, he succumbed to his condition a week later.

The passing of Ghamira has become a test for Syria’s new government to demonstrate its commitment to accountability post the fall of the long-standing authoritarian Assad regime. His death prompted peaceful demonstrations and sit-ins throughout the country, shedding light on numerous reports of alleged abuse within detention centers since the new administration assumed power.

Fadel Abdulghany, Executive Director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), emphasized the need for a comprehensive and judicially supervised system to govern detention practices in Syria’s transition phase. He stressed that the country’s progress hinges on ensuring accountability across all similar cases.

Ghamira, a former volunteer with the White Helmets, was detained on suspicion of theft by the Latakia Internal Security Command. Despite his family informing authorities about his medical condition and urging against physical harm, he was allegedly mistreated while in custody.

Following his release, Ghamira tragically passed away at Latakia University Hospital. The Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management mourned his death and pledged that the new Syria upholds justice and dignity for all citizens.

An investigation into Ghamira’s death has been initiated by Syria’s Interior Ministry, leading to the detention of seven ministry personnel for questioning. Authorities revealed that a police interrogator had struck Ghamira despite his medical condition, resulting in fatal complications.

Rights groups expressed concerns over the investigation’s findings, signaling that systemic reforms are necessary to prevent further abuses within detention facilities. Families of detainees from the Assad era emphasized the need for transparent investigations, formal apologies, and structural changes to prevent future mistreatment.

Reports indicate that despite promises to uphold the rule of law and ensure fair trials, abuses persist in Syrian detention centers under the transitional government. Human rights organizations have documented ongoing instances of torture, beatings, and deaths in custody, necessitating urgent reforms to address systemic failures.

The call for accountability and reform remains paramount as Syria navigates its post-conflict transition towards a more just and humane society.
