Israel’s Military: Gaza Airstrike Not Criminal

-

Israel’s military investigation has concluded that the airstrike in Gaza in April 2024, which resulted in the deaths of a Canadian aid worker, Jacob Flickinger, and six other individuals, including aid workers from various countries, was not a criminal act. The military prosecutor decided not to pursue a criminal investigation into the incident.

Reacting to this decision, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand expressed her dissatisfaction, stating that there were significant shortcomings in the airstrike’s execution. She emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring the safety of humanitarian workers in conflict zones. Anand stressed the need for upholding international humanitarian law and seeking justice for the victims and their families.

World Central Kitchen, an organization distributing food aid in Gaza, disputed the military’s account of the incident, calling for an independent investigation. The organization had coordinated the convoy movement with the military, and the vehicles, marked with their logo, were severely damaged in the airstrike.

The Australian government also condemned the decision, with Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressing disappointment over the lack of sufficient accountability for the death of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom. Wong criticized the Israeli Defense Forces for failures in following procedures and decision-making that led to the tragic outcome.

In response to the military’s announcement, calls for a transparent and independent investigation into the incident have been made by various parties, including former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau emphasized the need for accountability and rejected the notion that collateral deaths are acceptable in war situations. Additionally, concerns were raised about the silence of current Prime Minister Mark Carney on the matter, with calls for stronger action against those responsible for the tragic incident.
