“Rock Slides Close South Klondike Highway in Yukon”

-

A driver on the way to Skagway, Alaska, encountered rock slides on the South Klondike Highway in Yukon. Brandon Palmer described the experience of rocks falling onto the road, blocking his path. The highway closure between Carcross, Yukon, and the B.C. border will likely last until the weekend, with the possibility of reopening to one lane.

Yukon’s assistant deputy minister of transportation, Bobbie Milnes, stated that efforts are underway to clear the highway as quickly as possible. The closure now extends between the Conrad campground and the B.C. border. Geologists are assessing the situation to determine the cause and extent of the slides, with no injuries reported.

Despite the inconvenience, the closure is impacting local businesses, such as Wild Adventure Yukon, which relies on tourism traffic. One trapped driver, Palmer, managed to clear a path through the rocks and expressed gratitude for being in a safe position during the incident.
