The recent encirclement of Palestinian residences by militant Israeli settlers in Qusra village, located in the occupied West Bank, is not an isolated event. However, the American citizenship of one of the Palestinian homeowners has garnered more attention from the media compared to the frequent acts of aggression by hardline Jewish settlers targeting Palestinian land.
Ohio-based businessman Loui Ridi, along with his brother and nephew residing in the besieged homes, faced a threatening situation as settlers surrounded their properties. Ridi, determined to protect his family and property, highlighted the dire circumstances they were facing, including a lack of essential supplies.
The escalating settler aggression, aimed at displacing Palestinians, has become a common occurrence in the region. The expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, deemed illegal under international law, has significantly increased during the tenure of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his ultranationalist coalition allies.
Following his return to Qusra, Ridi, displaying his American identity, sought assistance from the U.S. Embassy. The village of Qusra, situated near settlement blocs and outposts occupied by radical settlers, has been a hotspot for settler violence, leading to casualties and property damage at an alarming rate.
Despite a call for help from Ridi and condemnation from U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who labeled the perpetrators as “Israeli terrorists,” the situation remains tense. The presence of Israeli border police and IDF units in the area aims to restore order and remove settlers blockading Palestinian homes.
As tensions rise, Palestinians like Rabia Odeh voice concerns over the collaboration between settlers and the Israeli army, leading to a sense of collusion in enabling settlement activities. The ongoing violence and intimidation tactics by settlers have fueled apprehensions among Palestinians regarding the intentions of the IDF in the region.
The systematic violence and land appropriation by settlers highlight broader issues that extend beyond individual incidents, as pointed out by Dror Etkes of Kerem Navot, an Israeli monitoring NGO. The plight of Palestinians facing settler aggression underscores the urgent need for international attention and intervention to address the escalating crisis in the occupied West Bank.
