A Toronto police officer is in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound sustained during a robbery investigation early Thursday. The incident led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man from Peterborough who now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and assault while resisting arrest. The police received a call about a stolen e-bike near Queen Street E. and Sherbourne Street around 3:21 a.m. The suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident, during which he allegedly shot the officer in the upper thigh.
The injured officer was promptly provided with medical aid by fellow officers at the scene and was transported to the hospital. The officer, who has been with the service for about three years, is currently in stable condition with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The accused, who was already facing weapons-related charges and had outstanding warrants in other regions, was swiftly taken into custody, and a firearm was recovered.
The ongoing investigation is focused on reconstructing the events that transpired. A second suspect involved in the incident remains at large. The incident underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, with over 600 Toronto officers reported injured while on duty this year, according to Clayton Campbell, president of the Toronto Police Association.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw expressed concerns over the accused individual being out on bail and wanted for other offenses, advocating for stricter measures to hold repeat violent offenders accountable. Premier Doug Ford called for judicial accountability, suggesting potential changes to legislation to address the release of repeat offenders on bail. Mayor Olivia Chow and Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop expressed gratitude for the police response and wished the injured officer a speedy recovery, emphasizing the risks officers undertake daily to ensure public safety.
