A woman confronted a group of men outside a pub after they shouted at her, leading to a situation where she had to be restrained when she brandished a knife that she had concealed in her bra.
Carlene Francis, aged 43, was walking along Regent Street in Hinckley when the incident occurred outside The New Baron of Hinckley. Footage from CCTV revealed that Francis sprinted towards the men, brandishing the blade and being physically restrained by a friend as she gesticulated vigorously.
Having admitted to possessing a knife in public, Francis faced potential imprisonment due to a prior conviction for a similar offense two years earlier. She was identified by Leicestershire Police officers from the CCTV footage and was subsequently arrested on the same day, appearing via video link from prison where she was already serving time for other offenses.
Earlier in July, she had been sentenced to nine months in jail for violating a suspended sentence order. Her defense attorney, Gary Short, highlighted that Francis’s actions stemmed from a history of being victimized, including a serious incident of domestic abuse that resulted in severe injuries.
Short emphasized that Francis had a traumatic past, having endured sexual abuse as a child and facing homelessness during her teenage years. He noted that due to her experiences, she often confronted threats rather than fleeing, as demonstrated in the recent incident at the pub.
The CCTV footage indicated that the men targeted by Francis seemed to dismiss the threat, with onlookers quickly returning to their activities without any apparent distress. Short mentioned that his client had been making positive strides while incarcerated, holding a job and achieving an elevated status within the prison environment.
During sentencing, Recorder Anna Trussler acknowledged Francis’s vulnerabilities and past challenges, expressing hope for her rehabilitation and future progress. Francis received a 35-week prison term, which will commence after her completion of the nine-month sentence she is currently serving, following the usual halfway release point.
