“BT Announces Shift to Digital Voice System by 2027”

-

BT has issued a crucial update regarding landline services, signaling a shift away from traditional copper cables that have served the communication needs for over a century. The transition to new digital services, utilizing internet-based calling technology, is set to take place by January 31, 2027.

The move is deemed necessary by BT and other companies due to the outdated and overloaded nature of the existing copper network, which no longer meets modern connectivity standards. BT’s Digital Voice system represents the latest advancement, promising a more reliable connection, improved call quality, call forwarding to mobile devices, and enhanced call screening features for security against scams and unwanted calls.

While over three million UK households have already made the switch to Digital Voice, many others still need to follow suit. BT emphasizes the importance of acting promptly to avoid disruptions to phone and broadband services as the transition deadline approaches.

The process of transitioning to digital services is straightforward for most users, with the option to retain their existing phone numbers and expect stable billing conditions. Basic steps involve connecting the current home phone to the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket. In cases where this does not work, reaching out to the service provider or scheduling an engineer visit may be necessary.

Customers with special requirements, such as those relying on telecare devices or pendant alarms, are advised to inform their provider promptly to ensure appropriate support arrangements are in place.

BT stresses the significance of upgrading the UK’s digital infrastructure to foster modern, secure, and resilient connectivity for all. BT Group Chief Executive Allison Kirkby highlights the necessity of such investments to drive growth and opportunities for homes, businesses, and communities as they connect to advanced digital networks.
