“Bungie’s Marathon: Longevity Confirmed Amidst Delay”

-

Bungie reassures worried gamers that their upcoming project, Marathon, is not at risk of being short-lived as some feared. Following the delay of its launch from September to March 2026 due to feedback from early playtests, Marathon is positioned as an extraction shooter akin to ARC Raiders, expanding on Bungie’s legacy post-Destiny 2.

Marathon will integrate elements of a hero shooter, allowing players to choose from various ‘Shells’ with distinct active abilities and passives, enabling personalized gameplay experiences and innovative buildcrafting opportunities. However, the combination of hero shooter elements with live service aspects raises concerns, especially after the recent failure of Sony’s Concord project shortly after its launch.

The upcoming Highguard, developed by former Apex Legends and Titanfall creators, is also under scrutiny with less-than-enthusiastic responses to its trailers. In contrast, Highguard will be free-to-play, unlike Marathon, which is set to debut with a $40 price tag, causing apprehension among potential players about its longevity.

Responding to player worries, the Marathon team affirmed their commitment to the game’s long-term success, promising a detailed roadmap closer to the launch date. Despite past disappointments with Destiny 2, some early supporters are eager for Marathon’s release, expressing optimism and anticipation for the game’s future.

Marathon’s structure will follow a seasonal model common in live service titles, offering free content updates to all players and an optional ‘Reward Pass’ for purchase. Unlike other games, these passes will not expire, allowing players to progress at their own pace and access previous seasons even after their conclusion.

At launch, Marathon will feature three maps with plans for a fourth post-launch. The full roadmap, unveiling additional content and updates, is expected to be revealed in the upcoming weeks before the game’s release in March on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
