Céline Dion opens up about battling rare disorder

-

Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris by sharing more insights into her battle with illness and the treatments she has undergone. The renowned Canadian artist recently unveiled in an exclusive Harper’s Bazaar feature that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022. This rare neurological autoimmune disorder brought on intense pain, with episodes that at times left her struggling to walk, necessitating high doses of Valium for relief.

Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that tends to worsen over time, affecting a minute fraction of the population. Its symptoms include muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While there is no known cause or approved treatment specific to the disorder, certain therapies can aid in managing its effects.

Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would attribute show cancellations to reasons like a cough or sinus infection, concealing the true extent of her suffering from her fans. This sense of deception weighed heavily on her as she felt compelled to be honest with those who had supported her career. Following her diagnosis, she halted all performances but is now preparing to make a comeback in September after a hiatus since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Dion has been diligently following an intensive recovery routine, which includes a combination of medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she dedicates herself to 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice a week and ballet classes twice a week to ready herself for her upcoming shows.

Described as constantly in motion and reluctant to remain still for fear of seizing up, Dion views her recovery and return to the stage as a miraculous opportunity not to be squandered. She expresses gratitude for the chance to perform again, emphasizing the importance of cherishing one’s blessings. Feeling strong, excited, and a bit apprehensive, she is eager to resume her performances in Paris, which are scheduled to run from September 12 to May 29 next year.
