DeMari Disna, a six-year-old from Steinbach, is confined indoors for the remainder of the summer following a collision with an electric bike. The incident occurred while he was walking with his older sisters and friends at a soccer park near his residence. DeMari sustained fractures in both the tibia and fibula of his left leg and underwent a 19-hour wait at Bethesda Regional Health Centre before receiving a soft cast. He was subsequently transferred to the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg for a hard cast.
DeMari’s mother, Shannon Broesky, mentioned that despite his current situation, he is handling it well, although feeling somewhat bored due to his energetic nature. Broesky emphasized the need for stricter regulations concerning e-bikes, especially after witnessing the accident involving her son.
Government officials are in the process of developing legislation related to battery-powered bikes and scooters. Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor expressed concern over the incident and emphasized the government’s commitment to reviewing and updating regulations to ensure the safety of citizens.
In response to the incident, Steinbach’s mayor, Earl Funk, highlighted the potential dangers posed by e-bikes, particularly in the hands of inexperienced riders. He stressed the importance of setting clear regulations and enhancing public education on the proper use of such vehicles.
The City of Morden has already implemented its own bylaws, including requirements for helmet use and adherence to traffic signals. Mayor Nancy Penner called for the establishment of consistent guidelines at the provincial level, especially regarding the age at which individuals can operate e-bikes and e-scooters.
Broesky expressed her desire for accountability rather than confrontation following the accident involving her son. She emphasized forgiveness and understanding, acknowledging that accidents can happen and the importance of fostering a culture of responsibility and safety among all users of electric vehicles.
