The world’s tallest bridge, located in China’s Huajiang Grand Canyon in Guizhou province, has recently opened to the public, significantly reducing travel time from two hours to just two minutes. This massive bridge, towering over the Beipan River at a height double that of the Eiffel Tower and nine times taller than the Golden Gate Bridge in the US, is a remarkable engineering feat.
Spanning a vast canyon, the bridge rivals China’s tallest building, the Shanghai Tower, in height. It took three years to build the structure, incorporating cutting-edge technologies like satellite navigation and drones. The use of “smart cables,” equipped with fiber-optic sensors for constant monitoring of stress and environmental conditions, ensures the bridge’s long-term durability.
Costing approximately £227 million and constructed with 93 segments totaling 22,000 tons, the bridge’s main deck is an impressive mile-long structure. The bridge, aimed at connecting the remote region of Guizhou with the rest of the country, is expected to boost economic development in the area.
Officials anticipate that the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge will strengthen economic ties between neighboring cities, fostering regional economic integration. The bridge not only serves as a crucial transportation link but is also poised to become a popular tourist attraction, featuring a glass walkway with transparent floors for a thrilling view of the canyon below.
Moreover, the bridge offers additional attractions such as a glass-covered elevator on one of its tower supports, ascending to the top for panoramic views. With a complex atop the bridge housing a café and observation hall, visitors can enjoy a unique experience, including adventure sports like bungee jumping and low-altitude skydiving.
