Disney’s ’90s cartoon favorite, Darkwing Duck, is making a surprise return with a new series greenlit by Disney+ after 35 years since its original debut. The revival will feature a fresh storyline where Darkwing Duck finds himself in an unfamiliar world with a rebellious teen named Duckie who persuades him to resume his crime-fighting duties.
While the plot is a departure from the original, it was crafted in collaboration with Tad Stones, the creator of the original series. Notably, iconic characters from the classic show will make a comeback with Mark Hamill lending his voice to Drake Mallard, a.k.a. Darkwing Duck.
The announcement of the reboot garnered mixed reactions from fans, especially regarding the replacement of the original voice actor, Jim Cummings, with Mark Hamill. Nevertheless, the cast lineup includes Seth Rogen as Launchpad McQuack and Lizzy Caplan as Gosalyn Mallard, along with Lilimar Hernandez taking on the role of Duckie.
Darkwing Duck first aired in 1991 on the Disney Channel, running for 91 episodes until 1997. The beloved character also made appearances in video games for Nintendo NES and Game Boy. Seth Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures, known for producing specials like The Muppet Show for Disney+, will handle the production of the new Darkwing Duck series, embracing the spirit of the show with the statement, “Let’s get dangerous.”
