Atlanta Falcons’ defensive player, James Pearce Jr., has been handed an eight-game suspension for breaching the league’s personal conduct policy, as per the NFL announcement on Friday. This action follows Pearce’s arrest in February after a domestic altercation with his former girlfriend, WNBA player Rickea Jackson in Doral, Fla. The charges against Pearce, including aggravated battery, fleeing police, resisting arrest, and stalking, could be dismissed if he complies with a pretrial program involving drug tests, keeping distance from Jackson, and staying clear of legal issues for a year.
Pearce will be permitted to participate in preseason games and team events until the suspension begins on Aug. 30. He may be reinstated on Nov. 2, following the Falcons’ Week 8 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, just before their matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid, Spain. The Falcons’ defensive line has been impacted by Jalon Walker’s season-ending injury, leaving them with a limited group of players including Christian Harris, JD Bertrand, Samson Ebukam, Kendal Daniels, Bralen Trice, and the addition of Cameron Sample post-Walker’s injury.
Furthermore, the NFL announced four suspensions on the same day, including Pearce. Dorance Armstrong from the Commanders received a one-game suspension for breaching the personal conduct policy, resulting in him missing the season opener against Philadelphia. On the other hand, Nazeeh Johnson of the Tennessee Titans was suspended for six games due to a performance-enhancing substances violation, while Phidarian Mathis of the Buffalo Bills faced a three-game suspension for breaching the substances of abuse policy.
Both Johnson and Mathis are permitted to practice and play with their teams until Aug. 30 when the 53-player rosters need to be finalized. Johnson is set to return for the Titans’ game against Cleveland on Oct. 25, while Mathis can join the Bills for their match against New England on Oct. 4. Johnson, with three seasons of NFL experience, previously played for the Kansas City Chiefs before signing with the Titans in July. Mathis, on the other hand, played for Washington before his stint with the Bills.
